# ASTM A312 vs A269 vs A213: Which Specification Fits?

Canonical: https://jundapipe.com/blog/astm-a312-a269-a213-selection

Compare the published scopes of A312, A269 and A213 and turn a stainless pipe or heat-exchanger tube request into a clear purchase description.

Choose ASTM A312, A269 or A213 according to the required product and application, not merely because the material is stainless steel. A312 addresses austenitic pipe; A269 addresses austenitic tubing for general service; A213 addresses seamless boiler, superheater and heat-exchanger tubes. The design specification must establish the acceptable standard and edition.

This comparison uses public scopes accessed on 25 October 2026. It does not replace the complete standards or establish compliance of a Junda product.

## What does each specification cover?

| Specification | Relevant published scope | Procurement question |
| ------------------------------------------------------------ | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------- |
| [A312/A312M-25](https://store.astm.org/a0312_a0312m-25.html) | Seamless, straight-seam welded and heavily cold worked welded austenitic pipe for high-temperature and general corrosive service | Which manufacturing route and pipe dimensions? |
| [A269/A269M-25](https://store.astm.org/a0269_a0269m-25.html) | Austenitic tubing for general corrosion-resisting and low- or high-temperature service | Which grade, wall basis and supplementary requirements? |
| [A213/A213M-25](https://store.astm.org/a0213_a0213m-25.html) | Seamless ferritic and austenitic boiler, superheater and heat-exchanger tubes | Which grade, wall basis and equipment specification? |

A heat-exchanger application label does not prove A213 certification. Seeing a familiar grade name does not resolve dimensional or inspection requirements.

## Why can similar material enquiries require different standards?

Consider three purchasing situations. A process line requires pipe identified by NPS and schedule. An instrument assembly requires tube identified by actual OD and wall, with connection-specific dimensions. A shell-and-tube exchanger requires seamless tubes with controlled wall basis, length and tube-end details.

Each starts with a material decision, but the deliverables differ. The engineer must check grade coverage, design-code acceptance, condition and testing. These examples explain the review process; equipment names alone cannot assign a standard.

## How do general requirements and supplementary tests fit?

[ASTM A1016/A1016M-24a, scope 1.1–1.2](https://store.astm.org/a1016_a1016m-24a.html) lists general requirements for specified tube standards, including A213 and A269. It gives precedence to the product specification over conflicting general requirements, and to a more stringent purchase-order requirement over either. Do not automatically apply it to every stainless pipe order.

A312 and A269 also provide for supplementary requirements to be stated in the order. Resolve these while comparing quotations. A test requested after production may require additional sampling or may no longer provide the intended evidence about the original production stage.

## What belongs on one purchase line?

Record product form; standard and edition; grade; manufacturing route; dimensions and units; wall basis; length and tolerance; quantity; condition; inspection; and documentation. Attach a deviation register and require each exception to be answered before the offer is accepted as technically comparable.

“Complies with ASTM” is too broad to settle a difference in grade or wall basis. If a supplier proposes an alternative edition or standard, request a clause-by-clause explanation of the relevant differences and refer it to the project engineer.

Junda lists [316L seamless pipe](https://jundapipe.com/products/316l-seamless-pipe), precision tubing and U-pipe.
