# How to Calculate PREN—and What the Number Cannot Tell You

Canonical: https://jundapipe.com/en-CA/blog/pren-calculation-stainless-steel

Calculate PREN from an illustrative stainless steel chemistry and understand why it cannot replace corrosion testing or material approval.

PREN is a composition-based screening number used to compare resistance to pitting in stainless steels. Calculate it from stated chemistry using an explicitly identified formula. Do not use it as a corrosion-test result, a seawater service guarantee or a replacement for material selection at the actual operating conditions.

[IMOA’s duplex reference](https://www.imoa.info/molybdenum-uses/molybdenum-grade-stainless-steels/duplex-stainless-steel.php) uses:

**PREN = %Cr + 3.3 × (%Mo + 0.5 × %W) + 16 × %N**

The percentages are mass percentages. The formula and coefficients must remain visible when comparing results, especially if tungsten is present.

## What does a worked calculation look like?

Assume an illustrative chemistry of 25.0% chromium, 4.0% molybdenum, 0% tungsten and 0.27% nitrogen. These are invented inputs for demonstrating arithmetic, not a Junda heat analysis or a grade acceptance range.

| Contribution | Calculation | Result |
| ----------------------- | --------------------- | -----: |
| Chromium | 25.0 | 25.00 |
| Molybdenum and tungsten | 3.3 × (4.0 + 0.5 × 0) | 13.20 |
| Nitrogen | 16 × 0.27 | 4.32 |
| Total | 25.00 + 13.20 + 4.32 | 42.52 |

With all other assumed values unchanged, nitrogen of 0.24% gives 42.04. The 0.48 difference follows directly from 16 × (0.27 − 0.24). Neither result establishes measured corrosion performance.

## Which data should be used in a real comparison?

Identify whether the chemistry comes from a grade reference table, specification limit or actual heat certificate. Keep those categories separate. IMOA’s table uses expected nominal compositions for its listed PREN values and notes the source limitations of its chemistry tables. [Reference notes](https://www.imoa.info/molybdenum-uses/molybdenum-grade-stainless-steels/duplex-stainless-steel.php)

For a certificate-based calculation, record the heat identity, certificate reference, element values and formula. If nitrogen is not reported, do not replace it with a favourable nominal value and present the result as measured heat data. Obtain the missing analysis or label the estimate explicitly.

Use consistent rounding after the calculation. Rounding every intermediate value differently can create a misleading difference between otherwise similar offers.

## Why is a high PREN insufficient for acceptance?

PREN summarizes selected chemical contributions. It does not document heat treatment, microstructure, surface condition, geometry, fabrication or the service environment. These questions require their own evidence.

[ASTM A923-25](https://store.astm.org/a0923-25.html) expressly notes that chemical and mechanical compliance does not necessarily establish the absence of detrimental phases in duplex material. The appropriate metallurgical examination must therefore be selected separately where the project requires it.

Think of the evidence in three stages: chemistry screening narrows candidates; specified tests evaluate material under stated conditions; engineering assessment determines suitability for the service. A number from the first stage cannot substitute for the other two.

## How should PREN appear in an enquiry?

If the project imposes a PREN requirement, state the formula, data basis, acceptance threshold and document requirements explicitly. Have the responsible engineer approve that requirement alongside the product specification.

Junda lists [S32750 super duplex pipe](https://jundapipe.com/products/s32750-super-duplex-steel-pipe), but the catalogue does not supply a heat-specific PREN for a future order.
