316L Seamless Pipe: What the L Grade Does and Does Not Solve
Review 316L for welded piping without confusing low carbon with universal corrosion resistance. Includes service and fabrication review steps.

An austenitic stainless steel pipe should be selected against the process fluid, temperature, pressure, fabrication route and governing specification. “Austenitic” identifies a material family; it does not establish a pressure rating or suitability for a particular plant. Start with the service conditions, then choose the grade and product requirements together.
Junda’s austenitic pipe catalogue includes 316L, 317L, 347H, 904L and 254SMo. These entries provide starting points for an enquiry; standards, dimensions and inspection still need project confirmation. Catalogue source
Describe the actual fluid. “Water” could mean treated freshwater, seawater, concentrated brine or a cleaning solution. Record normal and upset temperatures, relevant contaminants, chloride content, pH, stagnant periods and cleaning chemicals. If corrosion has occurred, record its location and appearance.
Keep mechanical design information on the same sheet: design pressure, design temperature, minimum temperature, cyclic duty and the applicable piping code. A material compatible with the fluid still needs a suitable wall thickness and joining details.
The following screening table uses IMOA’s material overview. It is a review sequence, not a compatibility chart.
| Candidate | Decision to investigate | Evidence needed |
|---|---|---|
| 316L | Is this baseline candidate compatible with the process and cleaning cycle? | Actual service chemistry and corrosion evidence |
| 317L | Does additional alloying address the identified corrosion concern? | Comparison at the relevant concentration and temperature |
| 904L or 254SMo | Does the service justify a more highly alloyed austenitic grade? | Grade-specific corrosion data and fabrication requirements |
| 347H | Does long-duration elevated-temperature strength govern? | Code allowable stresses, supplied condition and thermal duty |
The H-grade decision is separate from the chloride-resistance decision. ASTM A312/A312M-25, scope 1.2 identifies TP347H among modifications intended for temperatures where creep and stress rupture matter. This does not make 347H an automatic upgrade for a chloride problem.
A grade is only part of a purchase description. ASTM A312/A312M-25 covers seamless, straight-seam welded and heavily cold worked welded austenitic pipe for high-temperature and general corrosive service. State the manufacturing route explicitly, even when the standard covers several routes.
Record the edition, grade, dimensional basis, wall basis and required condition together. If the drawing calls for tubing, resolve the tubing specification first. The pipe-versus-tube guide explains the dimensional distinction.
Create one row per purchase requirement and one column per supplier. Classify each response as confirmed, proposed deviation or unresolved. Separate optional inspection, documents and packing from the base product.
Two offers headed “316L seamless” can differ in length tolerance, wall basis, finish or test records. Ask suppliers to identify differences explicitly; silence is not confirmation. Resolve the technical differences before comparing total cost.
Send the service sheet, specification and edition, grade, OD and wall or NPS and schedule, lengths, quantity and inspection requirements through the contact page. Add a drawing when connections constrain the choice. Use the response to close specific uncertainties before ordering; the agreed purchase specification establishes what will be supplied.
Links to standards bodies and material producers are provided for reference. Confirm the applicable edition, project requirements and acceptance documents for each order.
