Inconel 625 (UNS N06625, W.Nr. 2.4856) is a high-strength nickel-chromium-molybdenum-niobium alloy selected for severe marine, chemical processing, and elevated-temperature service. In purchase orders for seamless pipe and tube, the governing material specification is typically ASTM B444 (or ASME SB-444). However, citing "ASTM B444 Inconel 625 pipe" without specifying Grade 1 or Grade 2 creates critical engineering and procurement ambiguity.
The two grades within ASTM B444 share the same chemical composition but undergo different heat treatments, resulting in distinct mechanical properties and governing design codes. Grade 1 is supplied in the annealed condition, providing higher tensile and yield strength for operating temperatures up to 1100°F (593°C). Grade 2 is supplied in the solution-annealed condition, which promotes grain coarsening to maximize creep and stress-rupture resistance at temperatures above 1100°F. Citing the grade explicitly ensures the pipe matches your design calculations.
The primary distinction between ASTM B444 Grade 1 and Grade 2 is the final heat-treatment temperature and the resulting metallurgical microstructure.
Grade 1 requires a minimum annealing temperature of 1600°F (871°C). This treatment preserves a relatively fine grain size and maintains high room-temperature yield strength (minimum 60 ksi / 414 MPa) and tensile strength (minimum 120 ksi / 827 MPa). It is the standard selection for wet corrosive environments, seawater piping systems, offshore production headers, and pressure vessels operating below the creep regime.
Grade 2 requires a minimum solution-annealing temperature of 2000°F (1093°C), with or without a subsequent stabilizing anneal at 1200°F (649°C) minimum to prevent sensitization during subsequent service. The high-temperature solution treatment dissolves secondary carbides and precipitates, coarsening the austenitic grain structure to ASTM grain size No. 5 or coarser. This coarser structure provides the necessary resistance to time-dependent creep deformation and rupture at elevated temperatures, but reduces the room-temperature yield strength to a minimum of 40 ksi (276 MPa) and tensile strength to 100 ksi (690 MPa).
ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC) Section VIII Division 1 provides allowable stress values for both grades, establishing a clear temperature threshold at 1100°F (593°C).
| Parameter | ASTM B444 Grade 1 | ASTM B444 Grade 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Heat treatment condition | Annealed (min 1600°F / 871°C) | Solution annealed (min 2000°F / 1093°C) |
| Minimum tensile strength | 120 ksi (827 MPa) | 100 ksi (690 MPa) |
| Minimum yield strength (0.2%) | 60 ksi (414 MPa) | 40 ksi (276 MPa) |
| Minimum elongation in 2" (50 mm) | 30% | 30% |
| Typical ASME design temperature | Up to 1100°F (593°C) | Above 1100°F (593°C) up to 1800°F (982°C) |
| Primary failure mode addressed | Pitting, crevice corrosion, fatigue | Creep deformation, stress rupture |
Choosing Grade 2 for a subsea manifold or ambient chemical line needlessly sacrifices roughly 33% of the allowable yield strength, which forces design engineers to increase pipe wall thickness. Conversely, installing Grade 1 in a high-temperature reformer or flue gas duct operating above 1100°F risks catastrophic early creep failure, because fine-grained material undergoes rapid grain boundary sliding under continuous stress.
Both grades of Inconel 625 seamless pipe must conform to the unified chemical requirements of UNS N06625. The matrix is solid-solution strengthened primarily by molybdenum and niobium (columbium), eliminating the need for precipitation-hardening heat treatments.
Because the alloy does not depend on precipitation hardening, it retains excellent weldability and ductility, making it suitable for field spool fabrication and tight cold-drawing operations.
Purchasing seamless nickel alloy pipe requires strict alignment between the engineering drawing and mill production variables. When ordering, clearly specify the dimensional standard and wall thickness basis:
Junda verifies material integrity through factory chemical spectroscopic analysis, hydrostatic testing, ultrasonic flaw detection, and mechanical property testing at its testing capabilities facility. Material test certificates are issued according to EN 10204 3.1, or EN 10204 3.2 with independent third-party inspection agencies when mandated by the purchase specification, as outlined in our quality assurance system.
To obtain an accurate quotation and avoid technical hold points, your purchase requisition should state the full technical baseline rather than just an alloy brand name.
