Review 904L pipe against the specific acid, concentration, temperature and contaminants in the process. “Acid resistant” is too broad to establish suitability. Include cleaning, dilution, startup and upset conditions, then compare the proposed material with corrosion evidence that matches those conditions.

IMOA identifies 904L as N08904 and describes the role of copper additions in improving resistance to reducing acids in relevant high-performance austenitic grades. This explains why 904L can enter a material review; it does not approve it for every acid or temperature.

Which process details should the exposure matrix include?

ExposureInformation to recordReason for a separate row
Normal processAcid identity, concentration basis, temperature and impuritiesEstablishes the main corrosion assessment
Startup or dilutionSequence, mixed conditions and temperatureMay differ from steady operation
CleaningChemical, concentration, contact time and rinse conditionsIntroduces a separate chemical exposure
ShutdownResidual liquid, deposits and stagnant durationChanges the condition at the surface
UpsetCredible excursion and durationDefines the boundary of the proposed selection

Use measured or controlled process data where available. If concentration is reported in different units by different teams, reconcile the basis before comparing corrosion charts. Do not silently treat mass percentage and volume percentage as the same quantity.

How should corrosion data be evaluated?

Read the test conditions before reading the result. Identify the alloy, specimen condition, chemical purity, concentration, temperature, exposure time and reported metric. Determine whether the data concern general corrosion, localized attack or another mechanism.

A chart generated in a pure acid may not represent a mixed process stream. Similarly, a room-temperature result cannot establish behaviour at a higher temperature. Document the mismatch and ask the materials engineer whether further testing or another source is needed.

For a proposed replacement, record the existing failure mechanism. A better match to one acid exposure may not resolve a crevice, deposit or fabrication problem in the installation.

Does a product standard answer the corrosion question?

No. ASTM A312/A312M-25 describes austenitic pipe for high-temperature and general corrosive service, but its scope does not certify compatibility with the buyer’s acid stream. The product standard and corrosion assessment perform different jobs.

Specify the required grade, product standard and edition, dimensions, condition, examination and documentation. Require the technical offer to identify departures from this basis. Keep the service assessment attached so a proposed alternative is reviewed against the same exposure matrix.

When should another material be compared?

If the available 904L evidence does not address the process, expand the material review. The 904L versus 254SMo guide explains one comparison; the C-276 guide explains how to read a different alloy’s corrosion data. Neither comparison is a substitution approval.
