2205 vs 2507 duplex pipe: which grade to specify

2205 runs PREN near 35 and 2507 near 43: compare the chemistry, the strength minima, the 600-1000 C sigma window and the certificate designation.

About this video

This explainer is educational. PREN is a chemistry screening number, not a corrosion test; the strength values are published minima after solution annealing. It does not document a heat, an order or a service condition. Confirm the grade, standard, inspection and documents with Junda for each order.

  1. 010:002205 vs 2507 duplex pipe: what actually differs

2205 vs 2507 duplex pipe: two grades, one line on the purchase order. The price gap is easy to see. The selection boundary is not.

  2. 020:122205 vs 2507 duplex pipe: chromium, molybdenum, nitrogen and PREN

Start inside the steel. 2205 balances chromium, nickel, molybdenum and nitrogen. Chromium 21 to 23 percent. Molybdenum 2.5 to 3.5. Nitrogen 0.08 to 0.20. 2507 moves all four numbers: chromium 24 to 26, molybdenum 3 to 5, nitrogen 0.24 to 0.32. Nickel starts at 6 instead of 4.5, and the pitting resistance rises with it. Put that chemistry into the pitting resistance equivalent: chromium, plus 3.3 times molybdenum, plus 16 times nitrogen. 2205 lands near 35. 2507 lands near 43. That is the boundary, in one number.

  3. 031:04Yield and tensile strength: 2205 duplex against 2507 super duplex

On published minima, 2507 is stronger: 800 megapascals tensile against 620. 550 yield against 450. And 15 percent elongation against 25, so it is less forgiving. Both grades run the same seamless route: cold drawing, solution heat treatment, pickling, cutting, inspection. The die does not know the grade. The alloy, not the machine, sets what the pipe can carry.

  4. 041:35Why 2507 is not a free upgrade: sigma phase and the service temperature limit

The mill route is published: seven steps, two solution heat treatment lines, six pickling systems. Both grades leave it solution treated. The properties on the data sheet are that condition. Now the part a data sheet hides. Above roughly 250 to 280 degrees, both grades leave their continuous service window. Between 600 and 1000 degrees, sigma and chi phases precipitate, and the steel embrittles. Hot forming and uncontrolled welding put the steel in that window. More alloy does not buy it out.

  5. 052:10UNS, EN and GB designations on the duplex pipe certificate

The designation is where disputes start: S32205, S31803, 1.4462. Similar names, not automatic equivalents. Ask for dual certification, and check the nitrogen minimum against the grade you ordered. Wall thickness is not a grade multiplier. It comes from the allowable stress in the design code. So a stronger grade does not mean a thinner wall on your order. The code and the duty decide.

  6. 062:42How to choose between 2205 and 2507 duplex pipe in an enquiry

So the enquiry carries the duty, not only the grade name. Grade and designation. Standard. Outside diameter and wall. Condition and inspection scope. Everything the quotation has to confirm in writing. Super duplex is not a default upgrade, and standard duplex is not a default saving. Match the grade to the duty, then fix the designation on the order. Send the duty, the grade and the size, and we confirm the pipe against your specification.
